Secure by Design: iOS & Android

In an era of increasingly sophisticated digital threats, relying on basic tokens or surface-level authentication is no longer enough. To address this, Apple introduced two critical tools that enhance app protection on iOS: DeviceCheck and App Attest.

Why does this matter?

Apps that manage sensitive data — such as digital wallets, fintech platforms, or identity and authentication apps — face constant risks: device emulation, app tampering, and reverse engineering.

DeviceCheck has long been used by developers to create a form of “device reputation.” It allows apps to store two simple bits of data per device, which helps servers determine whether that device has shown suspicious behavior in the past.

For example, if a phone attempts to create multiple fake accounts, the server can flag it — even if the app is reinstalled.

The limitation of DeviceCheck

While useful, DeviceCheck is not a strong security layer. It can’t confirm whether the app has been modified or if it’s running on a jailbroken device or a simulator.

This means more skilled attackers can still bypass protections.

Enter App Attest

To solve this gap, Apple introduced App Attest — a much stronger solution.

App Attest leverages the Secure Enclave, the same hardware module that protects Face ID and iPhone passcodes. With it, the app can generate a unique, device-bound cryptographic key that cannot be extracted, duplicated, or forged.

Whenever the app needs to prove its integrity, it signs a challenge issued by the server. The server then verifies, with Apple’s help, that:

👉 The app hasn’t been tampered with.
👉 The app is running on a genuine Apple device.
👉 The response was signed using a real Secure Enclave.

App Attest turns the app into a secure, verifiable entity — almost like giving it its own unforgeable digital certificate.

This ensures that only legitimate apps on secure devices can interact with your backend, closing one of the most exploited vectors in mobile security.

DeviceCheck still has its uses, but it doesn't guarantee app integrity. App Attest raises the security standard to a new level.
