Solana

Solana is a high-performance Layer 1 blockchain designed for fast, low-cost, and scalable decentralized applications. Launched in March 2020 by Solana Labs—cofounded by Anatoly Yakovenko and Raj Gokal—the network is built to process up to 60,000 transactions per second while maintaining transaction costs under $0.001.

Solana’s core innovation is Proof of History (PoH), a cryptographic clock that sequences transactions before they’re processed by the consensus layer. This mechanism, combined with Proof of Stake (PoS) and other custom components like Tower BFT, Sealevel (parallel smart contract engine), Turbine (block propagation), and Cloudbreak (memory-optimized data structure), allows the network to operate with unmatched speed and efficiency.

The native token, SOL, is used to:

• Pay transaction fees
• Stake with validators to secure the network
• Interact with dApps and participate in governance
  

Solana has become a hub for DeFi protocols (like Raydium, Jupiter, Mango Markets), NFT marketplaces (Magic Eden, Metaplex), and Web3 gaming projects (Aurory, Star Atlas). In 2022, Solana Ventures launched a $150M fund to accelerate blockchain gaming development.

By 2024, Solana became the most adopted blockchain among new developers, driven by its developer-friendly SDKs and highly active grant programs.

Despite its strengths, Solana has faced challenges:

• Network outages, including several high-profile downtimes in 2021–2023 due to spam and bugs
• Security concerns, such as wallet exploits and DDoS attacks
• Regulatory risks, including past SEC scrutiny over its token sale and classification
  

Still, Solana remains a key infrastructure for scalable crypto applications, standing out for its speed, composability, and growing ecosystem.
